Bathurst rapidway construction - Atkinson:
YRT detour starts June 11

Metrolinx and York Region contractors continue building a rapidway — bus-only lanes in the centre of the roadway — along Centre and Bathurst Streets and Highway 7 West between Dufferin and Yonge Streets.

Starting Monday, June 11, the contractors are installing oil grit separators on the northwest and southwest corners at

  • the intersection of Bathurst Street with New Westminster Drive and Atkinson Avenue,

the site of the future Atkinson vivastation. An oil grit separator is a structure that removes sediment, screens debris and separates oil from the storm-sewer system. This phase of the rapidway project restricts traffic to just one lane in each direction on Bathurst. It also blocks east-west traffic from passing through the intersection.

York Region Transit is detouring buses operating along this route, while work proceeds:

  • 3 Thornhill.

This phase of construction at Bathurst / Atkinson / New Westminster and the YRT detour continue until June 15.

During this phase of the project, traffic signals at the intersection will flash in all directions 24 hours a day. “Paid-duty” York Regional Police officers will direct traffic.

The City of Vaughan is prohibiting southbound left turns from Atkinson and northbound left turns from New Westminster. However, motorists may turn left from Bathurst onto the two side streets.

Due to the nature of this work, expect construction-related noise and dust from equipment and trucks. Crews work from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. every day.
