Later and free service, New Year's Eve,
December 31

You may never get that free lunch that you’ve been waiting for, but you can ride your favourite train, subway, bus or streetcar free of fare New Year’s Eve and early New Year’s Day. Many Greater Toronto Area, Hamilton and Golden Horseshoe transit agencies are offering passengers free rides and later service to help everyone get home safely after celebrating the start of 2015.

Most local transit agencies absorb the cost of the free rides in their budgets. However, a major distillery is sponsoring free TTC service until about 4 a.m.— in 2010, the TTC estimated this cost at about $85,000. In Durham Region, a major employer is paying the bills to offer residents free and later DRT service. In Guelph, a local brewery is footing the bill for free and later Guelph Transit service, while down in St. Catharines, the unions representing transit operators, area paramedics and other emergency medical service personnel and several businesses are grabbing the cheque for the free and later rides.

These transit agencies either offer later service or free rides for their passengers — or both — New Year’s Eve:

Trains

GO operates later trains in both directions along the line.

The southbound train that usually starts its trip in Aurora GO Station at 9:11 p.m. starts, instead, in Allandale Waterfront GO Station at 8:25 p.m. It serves all stations along the line, arrives in Aurora at the usual time of 9:11 p.m. and ends its trip in Union Station at 11:03 p.m.

Late northbound trains leave Union at 12:25, 1:25 and 2:25 a.m. They serve all stations along the line and end their trips in Allandale at 2, 3 and 4 a.m.

GO is cancelling the northbound trains that usually leave Union at 10 and 11 p.m. (The trains usually end their trips in Allandale at 11:35 p.m. and 12:35 a.m.)

Free rides after 7 p.m.

Oakville Transit provides late-night buses from the Oakville GO Station at 2, 2:30 and 3:30 a.m., meeting the last GO Transit trains operating along the 01 Lakeshore West line from Union Station.

Passengers leaving the train board the buses that serve the area of Oakville that they wish to reach — northeast, northwest, southeast or southwest — and tell the driver where they wish to travel. The driver then designs a route “on the spot”, basing the route on where the passengers wish to go.
